• The gi is the traditional uniform you see most Jiu-Jitsu practitioners wear. Similar to a Judo-gi, it is a thick, durable jacket and pants that is built to stand up to the gripping that is key to Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu. Your partners gi lapels and material can also be used in numerous strangles, sweeps, and pins.

No-gi is a form of Jiu-Jitsu that does not use the gi, instead you wear a rashguard and shorts or leggings and grapple without the advantage of the grips. You should train both disciplines as they complement each other, with gi helping to hone your defence, and no-gi helping to hone your attacking game.

  • Hybrid training is a blend of ecological training and modern instruction. Ecological training is a learning approach based around physical problem solving in the form of task based sparring games. It’s otherwise known as a constraint led approach, CLA, or conditional training, it’s used at the highest level of Jiu-Jitsu.

  • Open mats are a controlled environment where you have the opportunity to take control of your own learning. You can work on whatever you like in a safe, supervised environment. Come along, grab a partner and feel free to drill, spar, hyper focus on a position, or just ask questions and get advice on your game. These sessions will occasionally have guest instructors from other gyms, Judo instruction, or become competition training class with refereed sparring sessions.

  • Mixed Level Gi Jiu-Jitsu is our more traditionally structure learning & sparring class, which features time for deliberate practice of positions and techniques, technical sparring games, and free sparring. The classes follow a structured curriculum (as do all classes at KODA:MA) and are suitable for all grapplers of all levels.

  • Intermediate Level Gi Jiu-Jitsu takes the lessons learned at the Mixed Level class and adds more detail, variations, and features more technical sparring and task based games to encourage problem solving and creativity. Everyone is welcome at these classes, beginners included, however those with more experience will get even more benefit out of the structure and approach to these classes.
